The Ministry of Environment, Climate Change, Disaster Management and Meteorology (MECDM), through its Environment and Conservation Division (ECD), is conducting compliance monitoring of mining in the Bugotu area of Isabel Province.
This ongoing monitoring aims to ensure companies comply with their Environmental Management Plans (EMP) and Development Consent conditions, including implementing mitigation measures and undertaking necessary corrective and rehabilitation actions. The Ministry also emphasizes that companies found in breach of these requirements may face penalties and enforcement actions for non-compliance.
The monitoring team, led by Mr. Philip Riogano, will engage with landowning groups to gather community feedback and address any concerns regarding company operations.
Four mining developments are currently being monitored: Pacific Nickel Kolosori (Kolosori Tenement), Far East Resources Company Limited (San Jorge Tenement), and Solomon Islands Resources Company’s Suma Tenement (under court order) and Tenement D.
With additional support from a Principal Environment and Conservation Officer based in Buala, MECDM continues to strengthen its monitoring capacity.
Despite ongoing challenges, the Ministry remains committed to safeguarding the environment while supporting sustainable development.
